How To Hook Your Phone Up Hands-free Bmw X5 2003
I am installing a hard wired aftermarket backup camera. I initially connectected the power wires to (what I thought) were the correct backup light wires. I measured the voltage on the backup wires as 10.6VDC with a multimete. Thought everything would go well.
However, all I got on my nav screen was a lot of rolling lines. Suspecting that this was a voltage issue at the reverse light, I measured it with an oscilloscope (yeah, I'm an engineer, I can get my hands on one of those) and I found that the car issues a varying voltage to the reverse lights which my multimeter just averaged or was not smart enough to display as an ocillating voltage. Bimmers... Go figure.
Anyway, after that, I hooked the camera power directly up to the batter and it worked just fine.
My issue: my aftermarket nav system automatically turns on the camera picture whenever there is a video signal, so as long as I have constant battery power, all I see is the backup camera image.
I know that I have to use a relay to solve this problem, but when I hooked up a relay to the reverse lights, all it did was chatter. I guess I could solve that issue with an in-line diode, but would rather get just a clean signal.
Has anyone out there have had to deal with this issue and could help me with some wiring, or do I have to build this whole relay-diode thing in my trunk?
Any help would be appreciated as I am a new owner and I'm finding out (quickly) that these cars are not wired like 'normal' cars.
