Hello everyone! I'm in need of some perspective.
My GF is a great person, who always means well, and take it upon herself to make friends with everyone she can. However, her 'love everyone' attitude has been taking a toll on my quality of life and now, my time.
For context, i'm african-american, born and raised as a city kid. She is caucasian, and grew up in a rural part of the US (think farms, cows, american-made dually trucks, etc). She's more of a 'city-girl', so we have quite a bit in common still, and our different upbringings rarely collide to create a problem for us.
Which brings me to the situation. As I said before, she's a wonderful friend to everyone she meets. She's constantly making new friends, and showing up for people. However, I'm constantly being dragged around and essentially scheduled to attend events fowith people that I will rarely see ever again. From dinners with her distant coworkers, to random weddings for people she may see once a year, it's come to a point where I'm starting to lose control financially, mentally, and emotionally. I've brought this up before to her, but it's taken as though i'm just complaining, and a certified fun-killer.
Even though I'm kind of an introverted homebody, i'd venture to say I'm a great time and a great date. I just prefer to spend my time, money, and energy on people that I know well. Also, I think I might croak if I have to make conversation at another country wedding with the neighborhood redneck.
How should I go about this conversation, and be able to have a productive conversation on setting boundaries? Is this even possible, or should I just suck it up as it's 'a part of the job of being a boyfriend'?

I've seen a ton of dudes get irritated asking about how different cities are like for Desi dudes and how they do with women of different races and cultures.
As someone who has stepped out of his pad and traveled around, experiencing different cities and interacting with different cultures of women, I have some breaking news guys. I mean turn off your TV and your notifications on your phone, this is some breaking news. And we are live........
It fucking matters, like A LOT, and if you don't think it matters then you are a fucking idiot with no life experience.
Like it matters in the sense of make or break. Before you get irate, hear me out.
I knew of two Indian guys when I was in NYC. One lived in Manhattan and interacted with various cultures of women, granted mainly Jewish girls and white girls who were transplants to Manhattan from other parts of the US. Most of the women he interacted with were educated and looking to experience the variety that Manhattan had to offer. Now the other guy, he lived in Manhattan where his demographic was mainly Italian American women with Trump-loving family members. For anyone familiar with the northeast area of the US, Italian Americans are practically their version of racist rednecks.
Here is a shocking revelation, I mean it will surprise the life out of you. The guy who lived in Manhattan? He fucking slayed. The one who lived in Long Island? Incel! Even more shocking? Their looks were relatively the same, both above average.
You see, everyone has a market and one of the easiest ways to get around biases against you? Know your market and play to it!
But here's the problem
This sub? It's not allowing that discussion to happen. It prides itself on being aware and in touch with reality while dissing political correctness but at the same time, on this topic, it gets more PC than a social justice warrior in San Francisco. Now everyone is saying 'all women are different dude, you can't judge them based on their race and background'. I mean, at this point, I don't know if some people are really that fucking stupid on here or if white trolls have infested and are consciously trying to shut down that discussion to stop brown men from having success.
Here's the truth pill, people from different groups will feel differently about you because of your skin color
It happens to everyone. Even white guys have markets where they might do well and others where unless they are Chad, they will struggle because they are just another white guy.
Likewise, the same goes for you.
If you try to buddy buddy with white bros in the Bay Area who were raised to see Indians as a lesser species? Good luck. Meanwhile, do the same with white guys in Texas who barely know much? Much different experience. The same goes for dating.
If you are not thinking about this stuff, you are a fucking idiot.
I hate to break it to you dude but you are not going to go to New Jersey and clean up with white girls there when most of the whites in a lot of the places are a bunch of racistass Italians and Slavs who have it out for men of your race.
You are not going to go to the Balkans and clean up with the women there when racism against Indian people is god awful in that part of the world and most dudes are full blown Neo Nazis.
It is not even solely about pussy here either.
The fact is, there are parts of the world and even the US where racism towards Indians is terrible. Not only can you NOT get laid, you might not even be able to safely walk around at night. Try being in Serbia and walking around casually, you might risk getting beaten halfway to death.
Even if you do not get beaten, just the overall vibe and hate towards you in some places is going to be just that bad and your success in general with anything will be limited. You might not even get to have career success or grow any confidence because locals are so racist against you.
Look guys, I know living under a rock is comfortable but you are not Patrick Star, it's time to come out and live in the real world for a second.

Opon staring the school year my friend group got a new member. A kinda redneck meathead guy(17) let's call Calvin. He likes working out, cars, Florida and a bunch of generally manly stuff. He's a really nice and down to earth guy who's always keeping it real but a little while ago he expressed that he's blatantly transphobic.
And I mean Blatantly. Calvin straight up thinks that Trans people don't exist, don't have the right to transition and they aren't real men or women.
I live in a time in place where I've met so many people with differing opinions on Trans people I've learned what and what not to let slide.
Usually its kids not respecting pronouns because they have a personal dislike or bias towards them or not understanding queer culture past the basics. Hell even dating a trans kid and secretly misgenering them to others because of thier bio sex.
Small range issues mostly caused by ignorance and not knowing any better
I'm not Transphobic at all and I have a ton of trans friends and I always try my best to learn more about queer culture to be more aware of things. Dispite being a Cis woman.
I don't want to be that one Libral who just boots people out for having a different opinion. But Trans rights are something I feel very strongly about.
In our friend group we have a gender non conforming trans guy with us. Non of the rest of the group is like Calvin but none of them seem to have a problem with it. And I don't know if all of them know Calvins views or not.
It hasn't come up sence I originally found out and it's not something that effects anything all that often. It's just something wierd that effects my view on him every once in a while and I don't know how I should be feeling.

Live in the deep red south. I don’t hate the south. I love it. I’m a “redneck”. I like trucks, I work construction, and tbh I even grew up in a trailer. My family is smart but not successful. my dad has severe dyslexia and his family Never treated it. Led to him never reaching his potential and my mom was very smart but naïve and tbh even she had no aspirations and was fine living like she and my family did.
But thats whatever. I see a therapist for that and I’ve grown past it.
But man, the ignorance is insane. I work 60 hours a week for a construction company. I make a very good living at 30 and I have been taken under many men and women’s wings. I came in a party animal fuck up and they’ve helped me become a somewhat driven successful goal orientated person. It was always there but they helped. Even bought a house.
But man, sick of being judged for taking a fucking vaccine. Sick of hearing lies about the booster. Sick of seeing guys with potential quit before the company starts testing weekly out of dumb pride. Tired of our countries flag being paraded ignorantly. I love this country. I hate seeing the flag being twisted by ignorance.
Sick of hearing rumors I had a “Fetish” because I dated a beautiful black woman for a year. Hate the fact that my grandmother said “I’m glad you decided to date one of our own darling. Now you’re kids will look like us” after we broke up and I started dating my current white girlfriend. Sick of being judged as trailer trash because I’m a foreman now and guys are jealous. Yeah motherfucker, I grew up in a trailer and still made foreman and provide for myself. Quit hating. They told me taking this promotion would put a target on my back and y’all, it sure did. I truly hope y’all know this isn’t coming from ignorance, but even the men of color get to me sometimes. I got promoted partially because I’m not racist. Men of color taught me so much in my life that I know a white perspective couldn’t . But man, some of them truly do have a “women ain’t shit that hoe better cook me dinner it’s ok to dog around she prolly cheating anyways” mentality. I know Reddit leans left and I know that’s maybe not correct but it’s what I’ve seen in my community.
Then white rednecks go home and talk about how those rap loving ignorant black folk are so toxic, but then drink so hard they have the shakes the next day and yell at their wives.
None of them trust the news or science. They all have opinions on the vaccine. They all gossip and resent the company but sure as fuck won’t quit. But they don’t improve anything either. They just complain.
And that’s what kills me. Seeing all these men and women with so much potential. And they drink it away. They get knocked up and settle for toxicness. They don’t save money. They blow it all. “6 years going strong!” In horrible relationships . Kids get born into it.
This shit happens everywhere. Just tired of seeing the best in people. Tired of smart kids making bad choices. Just sucks man. That’s all. I was helped tremendously. I feel like I try to give that help back and it’s taken for granted.
I want to help people. Sometimes I think about running for local office. Especially trailer kids and Kids of color. But brother, (and sisters / lgbt+) people are hard to help Sometimes

Overthrowing our diverse 50 state election is harder than winning a civil war.

You can’t fault Trump authoritarians for quietly pushing a post-election power grab, defying a thundering NO from eighty-one million citizen voters. There can only be three reasons Biden remains president: luck, a paucity of GOP coup brainpower or institutional resiliency. Drawing an Electoral College royal flush in 2016, surviving (wholly avoidable) debacles for four years, plus escaping two apt impeachment trials and a one-off, failed insurrection all prove Trump has more luck than savvy.
Still a rank amateur, as if incapable of learning politics (or election law, the Constitution, or strategic planning, doomed with dismal yes-men), he spent four years blundering between crises and misadventures. Every Trump debacle counted, but let’s not (like some) dismiss the self-protective momentum of democratic law, order and core institutions. Only winning a civil war compares with executing a successful election coup. Bravo for our being too sprawling a country, with 50 different sets of voting laws and tabulators. In truth, American elections look too big to fail—or fall to a coup by inept, creepy crooks.
Probability thus makes acing two royal flushes in one political career an extreme long shot. We should not dismiss mean-spirited, bad-loser right-wingers trying to corrupt state elections, nor that Trump is still waving his arms towards 2024, damn those growing Never Trumpers. No crystal ball for me, I go by the evidence at hand. Thus, 1) there are good reasons America has never endured a coup; and 2) Trump is incompetent at minimal leadership—so where’s the management/planning skills, the staff, realism, stable genius, or much thicker skin to truly make history by stealing a national election? Still no more than a slick reality T.V. stacelebrity/mass conjurer, Trump remains a laughable candidate to pull off what’s never been done: steal a re-election. Even the loudest mocking bird will never become an eagle, certainly no imperial lion.
Despite incumbency, demagogic leverage and months to plan, Trump’s band of 2020 buffoons could not twist a single state’s certified totals, let alone the many that would reverse his Electoral College disgrace. Trump aside, Bannon, Giuliani and Meadows are third-rate plotters, more full of bluster than brainpower or contacts. Four desperation Trump moves failed in Georgia: first, the push for GA to check on voter signatures (dead end), then pressure on the governor (denied), then arm-twisting of the secretary of state to “find” (manufacture) just enough votes to reverse the finale (rejected out of hand). Like a reality-defying spoiled brat, Trump then sicced the Justice Dept. into the fray, alleging fraud demanded GA state house intercession (kaput). Instead of changing one vote, the Criminal-in-chief rightly faces potential felony GA fraud charges, too dumb to avoid being taped committing the crudest, least successful fraud/intimidation/coercion transgression on record. And then came the Jan 6 flop, with added liability.

Dumb as the dumbest redneck

In fact, Georgia buffoonery simply replicated the Trump presidency, awash with authoritarian arrogance, contempt for law, scorn for the majority, and obliviousness to the merciless realities at play. Not only could Trump gangsters not fix anything (alone or together), they won the legacy distinction of rooting out novel ways to break what was never broken. Forget about promised health care, infrastructure or foreign policy triumphs, Trump fulfilled only one author’s prediction: everything he touches dies, including his own self-interest. By letting hundreds of thousands needlessly die from pandemic negligence, Trump killed his own presidency and chances for re-election, winning the dubious prize of worst president ever. All by himself—and dismal enablers.
Thus, though savvy Barton Gellman raises legitimate red lights on monumental threats to our democracy, he overstates that “Donald Trump’s GOP is much better positioned to subvert the next election,” claiming January 6 was just “practice.” For what exactly, more failed violence? The model of how to turn a defensible protest into a shocking, indefensible insurrection? What expert foresees a violent insurgency against the Capitol gaining Trump extremists power and control? Even Gellman expects the next “overthrow attempt” to be more about “subversion” than direct violence. Certainly, with permanent bone spurs, Trump won’t lead any physical assault, even to get pizza.
Yes, violence will flair up, our being chockablock with guns, but the military that refused to stand with Trump will crush the next deranged “militia” going violent. Full-scale civil war remains a most unlikely consequence of Trumpism and as yet untested, new voter suppression has not proved its GOP electoral worth. If anything, Trump’s electoral charisma is fading, except with the know-nothing (or know only FOX news) lackeys mouthing the most implausible lies and conspiracies.
True, Democratic leadership is not responding adequately to the war against democracy. For how long will Dems focus more on passing decent legislation than confronting prospects for high disruption, even losing Congress? Surely, Democratic messaging, publicity and education skills are way behind a nefarious opposition rife with misinformation. No one should whitewash this massive PR shortfall in the Age of Media. Time for a full-out political war against monumental threats to law, order, and voting fairness. Time for solidifying the democratic fortress, by whatever (legal) means necessary.

A country without a coup?

And yet, for two centuries plus, there are good reasons America has deflected an active, illegal and immoral theft or reversal of an election. Though anti-democratic, out of date and byzantine, the Electoral College has determined winners (if at odds with popular vote pluralities). Yes, in the 19th C there were defaults to the House and 2000 manifestly violated the spirit of majority rule (the illegitimate loser anointed the winner). But a violation or anomaly is not the same as coup—and no 2020 Supreme Court intervention screwed things up. Despite a scary surge of post-election, right-wing brouhaha, authoritarian rule by coup won’t come to America because an inept, phony orange impresario waves his shiny baton. The 2020 election in fact awarded the Dems (and Never Trumpers) control of the national government, so more of a victorious endorsement of our wobbly institutions than reasons to think this was a “practice” for another insurrection or coup. The Big Lie is Trump’s biggest gaffe.
UNC professor Zeynep Tufekci was right to warn (in post-election November 2020) that “America’s Next Authoritarian Will Be Much More Competent,” adding that “Trump was ineffective and easily beaten. A future strongman won’t be.” She wisely cautioned strongly against Democratic Party complacency and, considering recent disruptions, the overall Trump menace is anything but diminished (even as the cult leader staggers). I agree with Tufekci that “the real message of this election is not that Trump lost and Democrats triumphed” but that “a weak and untalented politician lost, while the rest of his party” has entrenched its power. Though I don’t see Trump the untalented politician as the inevitable nominee, any sustained weakness by Biden Democrats will set up the “perfect setup for a talented right-wing populist to sweep into office in 2024. And make no mistake: They’re all thinking about it.”
That means we have different threats to worry about than civil war or another violent insurrection, even an overt electoral coup. In fact, authoritarians world-wide take power not by force so much as by manipulating elections, elevating the strongman, talking up empty nationalism, impugning outsiders, and turning politics into a phony moral crusade. We should be on full guard against an array of authoritarian moves by the entire right-wing GOP, working in critical states to preserve the rights of voters, of women and of minorities. That work is most important, potentially diluted by noisy fear-mongering about street violence, civil wars, or coups. The enduring question after his loss remains unchanged: what happens to the Republican Party when Trump is no longer the malicious, disqualified puppeteer?

Earliest Historical Usage
The term seems to originate from the late 18th century to refer to a certain group of poor Celtic immigrants that inhabited the woods and mountains of south Georgia and north Florida (basically similar to the term hillbillies).
'[Crackers] are descended from convicts that were transported from Great Britain to Virginia at different times, and inherit so much profligacy from their ancestors, that they are the most abandoned set of men on earth' - Anthony Stokes from Georgia 1783
'a race of runnagates and crackers, equally wild and savage as the Indians' - Benjamin Franklin

Etymology
There seem to be a bunch of theories here.
16th and 17th Century
One origin is suspected to be 'craic' from Middle English, which originally referred to the sound a whip makes, but became to mean 'loud conversation'. The negative connotation of 'loud braggart' was already in place by the Elizabethan era ( 1558-1603).

18th Century
According to historian Dana Ste. Claire in his book 'Cracker', Northern authors in the 18th Century claimed that the aforementioned group of people got their name from cracking whips on their slaves. The author mentions that these people were probably too poor to own slaves.

19th Century
There are some mid-19th Century quotes in An American Glossary where writers claim those people were called 'crackers' due to their use of whips (on animals in the context of agriculture, not slaves).

20th Century
Ste. Claire (the author from two entries up) claims that in the 1940's the term was used by African Americans to mean a bigoted white person. The author doesn't state exactly where this meaning came from/how it's connected to the other meanings.

TL;DR - Summary
The earliest usage of the term cracker was plain and simple a slur used against a certain ethnic group of white people. There are 18th-20th Century sources that claim they etymology come from the sound of a slave owner's whip, but I haven't found any quotes. In my (layman) opinion, the latter etymologies are more like redefinitions of an already existent term. Unless someone can find a better source, it's best to think of 'cracker' as an almost exact synonym of 'redneck'/'hillbilly'.

First off cause i’m probably not the only one thinking this, teenagers probably ain’t the best place to get advice. But I need it, so it’s worth a shot. And second this post will be long so bear with me.
Basically i’ve been talking to this girl who i attend school with, let’s call her “M” for safety reasons. And we don’t have classes together other than band but we talk a lot over snap. We also both like each other we just aren’t in a relationship, i’ll explain later.
And tonight was a really off night. Basically she’s dealing with a lot of emotional stuff and i’ve supported her 100% of way etc etc. That’s the reason we aren’t together is because she wants to get better with herself before any dating can happen, and I support that too. And after we got done with a kinda tough conversation she started asking me questions. It was ok at first, how i’d act if her parents came on a date with us (their rule) and it was fine then. Then she said how she makes jokes using the N word.
Now, i’m form one of the more redneck, republican, states in the U.S., so it doesn’t surprise me to hear kids say that. I’m a democrat but i try to keep politics and stuff out of friendships and relationships. And i said how i didn’t agree with that word and how it’s use has caused pain for millions upon millions of people through generations. And then she said it was right for her to use it because black people say cracker. Now i’m like, wtf. All these derogatory terms are just plain stupid.
I tried explaining stuff to her and such but she just kept on about how it’s ok for her to say it. Now i really really like this girl and talking to her has been a joy. But i don’t want to be associated with someone like that, nor do i want to break mine and her heart by leaving her over a word. And now she’s brought up abortion, which i hoped she wouldn’t do. I’m pro-choice and she pro-life calling it “murder”.
And i just want some help fellow teens. What should i do? Me and her are kids still, this kinda stuff shouldn’t be a topic rn and yet is has become one suddenly. Just help me with this guys and gals.

Hey folks! I initially planned on putting all of that into a comment reply but I figured maybe somebody else could use this!
What I did with Evernote was to connect it to 'IFTTT' (If this then that) as well as an App called 'TickTick'. The recipe I crafted made it so that whenever I add a new note in a specific Evernote-Notebook it would copy it to a specific 'TickTick'-Todo list. The app 'TickTick' has some really nice and simple homewidget. So far it works flawlessly. I can add new tasks into evernote on mobile or pc and it gets synced to 'TickTick'.
Mind you that this is a 'redneck engineering' solution and aimed towards small to do lists and tasks such as 'Buy milk' or 'Pick up letter'.
For some reason I can't link my IFTTT recipe so I wrote it down like this here:
Preparation:
  • Obviously you need to have an IFTTT Account, download and install 'TickTick' as well as Evernote
  • Firstly you want to make a new notebook in Evernote called 'My tasks' (Or whatever you want it to be)
  • Your TickTick widget on your homescreen must be linked to TickTick's 'Inbox'
  • Add an Evernote-shortcut to your homescreen that will add a new note to your Evernote Notebook 'My tasks'
  • Go to the IFTTT Website and craft the recipe below (aka make a new applet)

  2. Alternatively go to your Evernote Notebook 'My tasks' and add a new note. Again Title = Task. Works on desktop (Mac/PC), mobile and online.
  3. Done. If you finished a task you can tick it off the TickTick widget.
  4. The notes in your Evernote Notebook 'My tasks' won't get deleted automatically, so I recommend to just delete them in a batch every now and then. Which shouldn't be a big issue if you sort by new.

I live in a very conservative state. I'm 26, almost 27, and lean pretty far left on most issues but especially social and cultural issues. I wouldn't say I change at work - I don't go along with or encourage racist/sexist/etc type of jokes, I don't speak with an accent to try and sound like the guys I work with, I don't act like I know everything about this business, I try to avoid politics but if politics comes up I definitely act like more of a centrist than I really am just to avoid the argument.
I also don't really tell people much about my life outside of work. I don't tell them I play in bands, how much time I actually do spend reading and watching videos about the shit they are all talking about (anything from politics to COVID to just general world events and history), I don't discuss my dating life outside of 'yeah I'm seeing this one chick, her dad works at such and such'. To them I'm just a single dude who has roommates and is a hermit. I just avoid anything personal or revealing due to the fact that I don't think I relate much to the general culture of the average construction worker. I know not everyone is a gruff old redneck, but alot of them are. I do relate to the younger guys a bit better but even then I just feel like a fish out of water socially sometimes when I'm at work. I get along fine but it sucks just playing dumb all the time to avoid confrontation. With all that said, the majority of the guys I work with are great people with good hearts and intentions but just have different views than me in life. We ain't gonna see eye to eye on everything and it is what it is. So I just avoid it entirely.

As you can imagine, Twerklight was heavily shorted and there was nothin the rootin tootin CEO, John Birdman wouldn’t do to stick it to those dang nab shorts!
On the Canadian side, CEO Jorge Paprika and his crew had spent the last ten years doing R&D to make materials that fuck with your head: from bending light (to protect pilots from laser strikes and make fucking invisibility cloaks) to improving noninvasive medical tests (bloodless glucose checks and more convenient MRI scans), Paprika had it all! This is because he issued a private dividend that shorts could not cover; It was a blockchain token on the chain tZERO that inaccessible for six months, forcing short sellers buy Overstock shares on NASDAQ to cover their positions, causing a squeeze.

Then I remembered in a conversation with someone that I knew someone who turned INTO a beard. So I present something a little different here; the creation of a Legbeard.
More accurate, it's not the creation of a beard, but an evolution of someone into one. Creation implies some asshole who is committing crimes against humanity by sitting and custom making these abominations to haunt the civilized world. This is a story that took place a long time ago, and occurred over several years. As such, it's going to be a slow burn. In what we are considering the 'prologue' here there's minimal beard shenanigans.
A classic Yooperism- 'if you don't know where to start, go back to the beginning.'
The Cast- names have been changed to protect the relatively innocent. The guilty can go deepthroat a cactus. many of these characters don't play a significant role in anything until AFTER the end of this story, but I wanted to compile them just in case I referenced them. I'm sure there's more I will remember as time goes on by.
Amy- the Beard to be. I'm not going to refer to her as a beard yet as at this time, she's still a normal teenager.
Kelevra- THAT'S ME
Amy's Dad (AD for short when I remember)- Amy's Dad. Grade A certified 100% asshole
.Amy's Mom (AM for short when I remember)- Amy's mom. Quiet woman, pretty much stuck in hell being married to AD.
Scandiweeb- My best friend to this day. A massive weeb and Scandiboo hence his name.
Afro- A friend of mine; we'd done theater and played D&D together for years.
Banana- Afros girlfriend at the time. Sweet girl, D&D player with our group for years.
Hellspawn- A girl I met at college. She would live up to her name over the years.
Tucker- A nerd friend I met through Hellspawn; nerdy redneck who is convinced he's gods gift to women.
Greg- one of my D&D friends connected through my family. freakishly tall and dumb as a post to boot.
Erica- one of Amy's friends.
The Jacksons- A pair of friends who are always connected at the hip. One a heavyset loudmouth, the other a quiet twig. They don't do anything separate in this story that I can recall as of now, so for now, they are just referred to as the Jacksons.
The setting- My junior year in high school in a small midwest village in the mid to late 2000s. Not kidding, a damn village. To have a school we pulled students from 5 surrounding areas to get a graduating class size of about 120. The family trees here look like a stump. 'Drive your tractor to school day' was an actual thing. I was a goofy kid; I did martial arts for several years at that point, enjoyed MMA, theater, video games, and D&D. At this point, I had a muscular build, and was okay looking and just did my own thing with my friends. Normal 16-17 year old kid stuff.
One day in a music class, there was something that drew my attention from the girls behind me. A group of girls I never really spoke to were doing something and I had pointed out something they weren't supposed to do (don't remember what it was, like leaning on the scaffolds railing or something). A particularly pretty blond girl seemed to take offense to what I said and replied'Don't talk to me, I hate you.'
I shrugged 'whatever' and carried on with my day. I gave no fucks and had better things to concern myself with. I returned my focus to the conductor, and moved along. It was time for the spring musical and the director for the music program was also the musical director for the play; since most of the cast was in the class, time was split in class between practicing for the shows and prepping for the spring concert itself. Students who weren't in both were pretty much left to their own devices for the period and were free to fuck off. So I had plenty to focus on rather than some random blonde pain in my ass running her mouth.
Over the coming days when we were in class, much to my annoyance, she started talking to me regularly; we'll call her Amy for now. For the most part, she was pleasant and fun to chat with. Her personality was contrasted heavily with her appearance. She always wore long dresses, her hair in a bun (or on a day she was really adventurous, in a ponytail), glasses, bright blue eyes and a sweet smile. However, she was much more of an emo kid with too much energy and a bookworm, which made her fun to chat with. I enjoyed our conversations about random high school crap. Turns out her initial comment to me 'I hate you' was fueled by a rather nasty and vile rumor another person had spread to her about me, and as she talked to me, she decided it was more likely it was just a lie.
Fast forward a few weeks -- we start talking about going out. Which over the course of talking to Amy, I realized her family was deeply religious in the local churches. Which meant having to deal with that song and dance.
For context- the churchs were stupidly influential in our area, and largely still are from what I've heard. Cliques were subdivided generally by what church they went to (with about 2/3 the students belonging to some church or another, and man these fuckers in high school were judgmental. They acted like they weren't, but anyone with a half functioning brain cell could see these guys were definitely ones to cast the first stone. So the prospect of meeting religious parents was not high on my priority list, especially given how I dressed. I typically dressed like a goth (most of my wardrobe was and is black simply because that's the color I'm most comfortable in), and combined with my long black hair...not the spitting image most church going parents want to see their daughter dating.
Well, time came for me to meet the family. I went over for dinner, looking classy and minding my bearing. Amy's Dad was an asshole, plain and simple. Loud, overbearing, obnoxious, and dumb as a damn post. Her mom was cool for the most part, and I got along great with her. She was quiet, but would happily joke around if prompted or would talk more if directly spoken to (I'd come to understand this more in the future), but was confused slightly that she dressed in largely the same fashion as Amy; long dresses to the floor, hair in a bun or ponytail. Regardless, Amy was super nervous, but I pulled the parents aside and did the classic 'asking for their permission to date their daughter' schtick. I figured I'd go through the song and dance since that would make life easier in the long run.'What church you go to Kelevra?' Her dad asked. I was kind of dreading that question.
'I don't. Not my family's thing.' Which is true- my family is closer generally to being Buddhist than we are to being Christian. Dually so since despite our white skin, one of our most beloved grandmothers is from Okinawa.
'Well, tell you what. We'll give you permission if you go to church with us on Sunday.' Her dad declared. Amy was out of earshot in the living room, so didn't get to hear this exchange.
I agreed; worst case scenario I figured was I'd have to dodge an angry mob of church goers or just spontaneously combust upon setting foot. Amy was delighted I was going to go to church with them the next day (she was not generally a fan of that organization). A few days later I arrived to ride to church with them in my nicest attire (black slacks, black longsleeve button up and my hair in a ponytail), and ready to go.
Preface-- I generally don't care about religion. Whatever you have to believe in to make you not an asshole and a productive member of society works for me. If you need an angry spaghetti monster screaming at you from space to tell you not be a dick, I think you're an oddball, but at least you're not a dick. What irks me worse is when people use religion to BE A DICK to people.
So we arrive at church, and come to find out I'm getting hosed on this deal, despite getting time to spend with Amy. It's not a simple 'go sit for an hour through a sermon and then bounce' situation. It's an hour of teenage sunday school from instructors who clearly don't actually grasp the concept of what in the bluest of hells they're talking about, THEN an hour of sermon, eating lunch, then going back for another hour and a half of a second sermon.
Now again, I don't care especially nowadays about someones personal religion. However, this was a Pentecostal church. And holy shit were they bonkers. I've spoken to other people of Pentecostal denominations since then, and apparently these guys went to the extreme. Upon arrival, I noticed that almost every single woman and girl dressed near in identical style to Amy including the hair and dress. Second, there was CONSTANTLY someone running around speaking in Tongues or proclaiming the Holy Ghost was within them that day. Third- all the women were a step behind their husbands in this place. The men all walked forward ahead of them and did 80% of the conversations.
Oh it got better. I'm kidding, it didn't. These fuckers not only wanted donations in the usual collection plate (fine, it's to be expected), but were having long administrative meetings OPENLY about tithing as well from various members incomes. Great...I walked into a fucking cult.
At that point, I decided I was safe from being struck down by an angry deity under the reasoning on if this bullshit was allowed, I was likely safe from God deciding to smite me for wearing dark colors and doing other 'questionable' things as condemned by this church.
Nonetheless, Amy and I shared in our mutual discomfort of the situation by using a small bit of joy that we got to spend time together. Over time at school, she got a bit paranoid of many of my female friends ('SHE LIKES YOU SECRETLY!!!!') or would occasionally accuse me of flirting/cheating with them (If I did flirt with them, it wasn't intentional or even mean anything by it, so I did try to start being wary of how I talked to my lady friends), but over time Amy befriended them and all was well and we move on to the end of the school year.
We go to Prom (I was a junior, she was a sophomore), and it was a fine, if stupidly expensive, dance. I hate most of my fellow Juniors, and the few I like didn't go to prom, so I was ready to gnaw my fucking legs off on principle to get the hell out of out there.
Summer comes and goes; Honestly it was really nice; we'd usually see each other a few times a week during the summer, go on a goofy teenager 'accompanied date' once a month or so, and I'd occasionally go to church with Amy when I didn't have a handy excuse to get me out of it. As far as high school romances went, everything was great and I was happy with it. I had a lovely girlfriend who was funny, interested in a lot of the same things as me, and we enjoyed spending time together.
Then the shit show starts to really begin. Enter my senior year...
I get invited to a special dinner by Amy one random week. Apparently her brother Nate was coming to visit and bringing his new girlfriend to meet Amy's folks. Amy rarely talked about him, so I paid it no mind. So I arrive a bit early and am enjoying cuddling Amy on the couch when her brother and his girlfriend arrive. My jaw drops.
Turns out I know both of them. Nate was one of my sisters friends from when they went to school, and the last guy she ever dated before she said 'fuck it, I'm a lesbian.' My sister is 7 years older than me (I'm 17-18 at this point). The girlfriend was a girl IN THE SOPHMORES OF MY HIGH SCHOOL!!!! We'll call her Carla, to protect the innocent at this.
The whole time, my brain is trying to process this logic as is Amy's. Yet somehow, Amy's parents think this is DELIGHTFUL! And it's not like Carla looked older; she was visibly younger in attitude, appearance, maturity, and mannerisms than Amy was. So throughout dinner, I'm feeling my gut do Simone Biles impersonations as they discuss how long they've been together, how NATE DRIVES HER TO SCHOOL WHEN SHE STAYS OVER AT HIS PLACE, etc. Amy's Dad thinks this is all great. Mom is sitting for the most part in silence, but I've known her well enough to pick up the cue that she is NOT happy about this in the slightest.
We finish dinner, and at this point I can't stand it, but social niceties of being a guest dictate certain levels of conduct; I knew if I exploded with what I wanted to say/do, I'd probably lose the physical fight against a far larger enemy (Nate), but wreck my relationship with Amy. So I bit my tongue, feigned fatigue got a ride out of there as fast as possible. Amy messaged me that night (good old Yahoo messenger) about my hasty exit. While she was in agreement with me, because of her Dad supporting it, there wasn't much of a fight that could be won on any grounds (police were fucking useless in our area unless it was pulling someone over for DUI or busting meth labs). So instead she decided to befriend Carla to the best of her ability to give her as much support and an out as best she could.
Spring Senior year- At this point, the Twilight books had hit in full damn force creating the highly annoying fandom. And due to Amy's emo streak AND being a book worm, she had to read them all. To each their own, I paid it no mind. I got one of them for a gift for some event for her, and she was delighted. She kept calling me her Edward, and again, I paid it no mind thinking it was the standard teen romance shenanigans. . Then she did the unforgivable, an act so fucking heinous she should have been tried for war crimes; she wanted me to read them.
I read it, and I swear the brain cells I lost in the process could have been used for curing cancer, or creating sustainable energy for the world to use on a perfectly renewable scale. I could barely stomach the first book; if I met someone who was into self pain I'd just hand them this book and let them go into ecstasy. Everything about this book was BAD. Writing, dialogue, character development, descriptions, etc. were just horrific.
And the part I took the greatest offense to? Her calling me her Edward. I went off on the 'relationship' of the character how it was the exact opposite of any kind of a healthy relationship, and should absolutely NOT be used as an aspiration to unless you are trying to end up on an episode of some crime documentary about mentally ill obsessed partners.
Amy was not amused; she instead argued that 'his love for her was beautiful and unending!' and 'it didn't matter what form it took, it's existence was what was the point'. Comparing me to Edward was a compliment. I argued that it very much did matter the form it took, as this was the same kind of logic used in spousal abuse cases.
Should have been a warning bell. Regardless, another prom (this one much better than the first, and far more pleasant), and everything is still progressing smoothly.
Quick Fastforward- My high school graduation. My family is holding a small event at their house for everyone to drop by and celebrate. My friends, Amy, her family, etc. are also attending (without Nate and Carla, thank whatever deity wants to claim credit). Now, to this point, I'd managed to keep my family from interacting TOO much with Amy's Dad; they already didn't like him on principle of him just being loud and obnoxious. Unfortunately, I would not be able to keep that up for long.
I had gone inside for something, where my brother and my mom were having a cigarette or something. Amy's Dad comes in, and starts complaining loudly about his work (he worked for a Japanese automobile manufacturer or something like that). Most everyone tuned out to until the line 'and those fucking gooks....' left his lips. The rest of the sentence never made it past the slur.
Remember our heritage? My older brother is very proud of his heritage and does not suffer the ignorant to pass especially when it comes to blatant racism.
'Got something else to say to this fucking gook!?' As he barreled up right into AD's face. That bastard wouldn't have said shit if he had a mouthful as he meekly backed down from my brother and slinked out the door.
When he left, my family broke up laughing uncontrollably. This was comedy gold. Amy's Dad didn't stick around much longer; within minutes he gathered up AM, said their hasty goodbyes and were gone. Amy stayed with us since she was going to help with tearing down the little tent we had erected and we'd get her a ride home later. She was needless to say, confused as hell until I explained it to her what had transpired.
Anyways, I began college shortly after- while I had gotten accepted to one of the top universities in my state and had significant financial aid, I had opted not to go since I would still need massive student loans and my family didn't quite have the financial stability to help further (also, I had been studying trends of the economy and had a good idea that taking out student loans even backed by the government was a terrible fucking idea. Man I was right). So I went to a local community college where I had pretty much a free ride while working for the family business doing what I could to help there. Also, it would leave me closer to Amy while she finished her senior year and it'd be easier to spend time with her (also, she was jealous/worried I'd find some college girls irresistible if I went away to college full time).
'Kelevra, you know you're going to be around all those partying horny girls, I'm just scared you're going to find one smarter and prettier than me!' Amy had often declared.
'No Amy, I'm not. I'm there to study and get my shit done and get out.' Which was true. I didn't particularly care about partying or socializing.
'BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW!?!?!? YOU CAN'T PLAN FOR EVERYTHING!' She'd cry in response.
We had this argument dozens of times. In the end, I figured it was just nerves and wrote it off.
In the cruel fucking irony of the world, on my first day in my first class and even the first person I spoke to there, I did meet the woman would become my first wife; Hellspawn. But that's another story for another time.
The constant allegations of now not just me flirting, but me actively cheating are flying constantly now throughout the schoolyear from Amy. I do my best to write it off as nerves and upset I'm not always around now even though I'm doing my best to be there to pick her up from school so we can hang out or go on good proper dates now that I've got some income.
This goes on through her graduation; she starts working at a local business as well and decides not to go to college. However, literally nothing changed.
Scandiweeb pulls me aside one fall evening and asks how I'm doing. Apparently, he could see the wear and tear on me from constantly having to defend myself from accusations of cheating. It was mentally exhausting to have to prove I wasn't doing anything (and I genuinely wasn't). He stated his belief that he was beginning to think Amy was losing her fucking mind and something else was amiss. While he didn't give a shit one way or another, Scandiweeb did voice his concern as a 'one and done' for a friend. He never mentioned her again unless I did, and even then it was simply statement of facts, never opinion.
Our circle of friends had expanded. Tucker, whom I'd met through Hellspawn (another story in and of itself) became part of my old high school circle involving Afro, Banana, the Jacksons, and Greg. Amy was also a part of this crew, and they'd all hang regularly in various groupings. Which was fine, as it didn't bother me and I figured socializing with other people might do her some good and give me some damn peace and quiet.
Nope.
Sometime in winter, Amy calls me. Says she's got something she wants to tell me.
'Alright, whats up?'
'So I've been talking to the boys...and I've kind of got a bit of a crush on Greg.' She replies.
well that's fucking annoying...kettle, pot calling....
'ok, has this gone into anything I should be upset about? I get crushes happen, but what matters more is how you handle it.' I replied. I figured I'd handle it rationally; god knows I was never afforded that courtesy.
'oh no, we're just talking and I really like him.' Amy replies.
'well, then don't talk to him as much to avoid leading him on or anything. Just be mindful of what you say and it's no big thing.' Yeah, in retrospect, probably not the smartest route to take.
Didn't hear shit about it after that. I paid it no mind. However, winter fell and between school, work, and helping around the house, I didn't get to see her often especially with the heavy snow falls and my tiny shitty car. Whenever we'd talk, she was short and snippy with me since because of the weather, we were limited in what we could go do.
By this point, she had started breaking away from the Cults rules. She wore her hair down, wore pants and shorts (SCANDALOUS!!!!!), etc.
But I saved up some money and had this massive date planned out for our anniversary in March when the snows have generally become less melted and dangerous. Fancy dinner, dancing, flowers, the whole 9 yards. I had told Amy a week or so in advance that we were going out the night of our anniversary (even bought her a dress she really wanted in her size just to wear for the evening as a surprise) and that it was going to be a great night.
We hang out the night before our anniversary; it's been just short of 4 years or so. As I drop her off at home, she blurts out. 'I'm in love with Greg.'
'...wut.'
'I didn't mean for it to happen. It just sort of did.'
'Then you have a choice to make. Me or Greg.'
'I don't know...I can't choose.'
'ok, you made your decision then. Bye.' As I popped her door open and bid her the fuck out of my car. I was done and justifiably so as far as I was concerned.
Amy broke down into tears at my change in demeanor and words. She got out and ran to the door of her house.
I went home and slept. I figured I'd burn the dress later when I was less tired and it wasn't so damn cold out. I didn't know Gregs side of it and I really didn't care. I was betrayed on Amy's side, and honestly that shit really hurt. I could see some of what was going to happen in the coming months, but I couldn't predict how fucking weird and revolting shit would get.
Now begins the descent into the proper Legbeardiness....if there's a enough people who want to hear it from this point.

So I’m originally from the UK and came to the states awhile ago for work. A friend and I went to grab lunch and she said she was inviting a friend. He’s comes in and sits down look me dead in the eyes and says “you’re new I’m Ryan” he puts his hand out for a handshake. I shake his hand and tell him my name then get awkward af. I tell him I love his southern accent. He cocks an eyebrow and says “I’m from Iowa but close enough I suppose.” Feeling stupid I get shy and I’m nervous because he’s gorgeous. Tall deep blue eyes blonde super fit. He’s got this deep voice and the most intense stare…..he’s fucking intimidating. He talked about hunting fishing traveling etc. I normally don’t have any problem asking someone out but I’m freaking out about it. My friend says he’s single and an amazing guy. She jokingly referred to him as a civilized redneck idk what that means? How do I ask him out? What do I invite him to do? My friend says he doesn’t drink so idk what to do or say. I’ve dated guys from the states but my friend said that midwestern guys are different? Is she messing with me?

My uncle Laszlo was, until recently, known as a quiet small-town retiree. He collected stamps, watched documentaries, and was deeply involved with various local charities. I have nothing but fond memories of Uncle Laszlo.

So when I heard he’d killed four people, I couldn’t believe it.

I’m sure some of you have heard of it, but from the other side of the media frenzy. An old man who snapped and killed his neighbors with a shovel. He would’ve killed more people if the police hadn’t taken him down with deadly force. Something just made him snap.
I was seeing everything from the outside as well. No one in my family knew what to say. There was no indication that Uncle Laszlo was so troubled. If anything, he was one of the saner members of my family. He had plans for years to come. I’d heard him talk about a trip around the world, once he’d managed to sell off some of the stamps in his rare collection.
“Money doesn’t add sand to your hourglass” he used to say.
He had no children of his own, so he spent a lot of time with his nieces and nephews. He always brought us amazing gifts for Christmas.

So you can imagine my surprise when, just a few days after the murders, I received a letter from him. Hand-written, as always, with a carefully placed stamp in the upper right corner. Pristine condition, with a picture of a blue sunflower. ‘Tomskog, Minnesota’ it said, followed by the date 1912. Uncle Laszlo loved collecting various local rarities, and this one looked like a particularly old one.
The letter itself was nothing out of the ordinary. He told me he was looking forward to seeing me on Thanksgiving, and that he hoped everyone in the family were doing well. He seemed to be in good spirits. There was no indication of anything out of the ordinary.

As the weeks passed, we were allowed to pick up his things. Mom couldn’t bring herself to go anywhere near his things, so me and my two brothers were on our own. We took time off work to box up an entire life. Mementos from various adventures. Treasured keepsakes from his youth. Pictures of smiling people that hinted at a life of optimism.
I was the one supposed to pack up his stamp collection. Years and years of meticulously collected squares. Folders sorting them by dates, rarity, country, state… all kinds. Taking down the centerpiece of his collection, the “CIA Inverted” stamp, that’s what broke me. He’d shown it to me so many times, so proud that he had a piece of history preserved.
But it was when I started to clear out his desk that I noticed something strange. There, among his stationary, was an entire sheet of the blue sunflower stamp I’d received. I picked up the sheet, looked it over, and turned it around. One stamp missing, probably the one he sent to me. There on the back of the sheet he’d written; ‘NOT USE’. Two words, six letter. Just ‘not use’.
It was written with an orange highlighter, possible the first thing he’d gotten his hands on. Looking around the floor, I found the highlighter thrown into a corner. I got this uneasy feeling that there was more to this, and that these stamps were a part of it.

I couldn’t find much information about them online. Apparently they were the result of some sort of commission contest back in 1912, but that was all that was known about them. They were a bit of a rarity, but most collectors had just never heard of them. They were a local curio, at best.
I found a collector in the very town the stamps had come from; Tomskog, Minnesota. I contacted them and was surprised to hear that they personally knew my late Uncle Laszlo. They’d talked to him just a few weeks prior to the murders. They asked to meet me, and to bring the stamps. Bringing the stamps seemed to be the most important part.
How could I refuse?

I took the family car up to Tomskog, Minnesota over the weekend. I told my wife it was to meet an old friend of my uncle’s, and she didn’t want to question it. It’d been a trying time for all of us. It’d be too hard to explain that there was a stamp collector that might know something about his nervous breakdown.
By Friday night I pulled up in front of a motel on the outskirts ofthe town. The second I got to my room there was a knock on the door. There was a woman in her early 50’s outside. She’d been running, and she looked anxious. She had a frail physique and these thick glasses, like something straight out of a cartoon. Even as I walked up to the door, she was still pounding on it.
As I opened the door she forced her way inside without even telling me her name.
“Do you have them?” she asked. “Are they here?”
I nodded. I’d kept the stamp sheet in a folder and handed it over. She snatched it out of my hands.
“Okay” she said, her shoulders relaxing. “I have to go.”
“I think I deserve some answers” I said. “Can you tell me anything about them?”
That’s when I noticed she had a small blade in her hand. Just a pocketknife, but still.
“I’m just gonna walk away” she said, not breaking eye contact. “Understand?”
I nodded. As she left, it took me a few seconds to accept I’d been robbed. Was she ready to kill me for that sheet of stamps?

I called the local sheriff’s office, but I didn’t even get to file a report. As soon as I started explaining, the only thing they picked up was ‘woman’ and ‘motel’, and that was all they needed to hear. They dismissed me entirely.
I sat there in my room for at least two hours. I checked my phone and tried to get in touch with the collector I’d been e-mailing, but I got nothing. I started checking various social media for any indication of who my contact person could be.
By chance, I found a subreddit for stamp collectors. In a discussion where everyone said which state they were from there was a user with the same name as the one who I’d been in contact with saying they were from Minnesota. That couldn’t be a coincidence. I started checking their posting history and got a pretty good idea of who they were.
Finally, I found a post titled “The first thing I see when I get my morning coffee”. It was a picture of the downtown area, as taken from a hill. There were a few stores that I could use for orientation. Whoever my contact really was, they lived downtown.

I took a walk and found the hardware store from the posted picture. Using that, I managed to find a side road leading up, through a forest path, to a nearby hill. There was a long street with six almost identical houses, but I spotted a mailbox in the picture that seemed to stand out.
It didn’t take me long to find it. They’d actually painted a stamp frame around their name. How more obvious could you get?
Walking up the graveled path to the front door, my heart was beating faster and faster. I felt like there was something awful around the corner, something in the air. Something had gone wrong.
My fears were confirmed as I saw the front door wide open.

I had to do something. I considered calling the sheriff’s office again, but I figured they wouldn’t take two calls from me the same night. I tried, but I was placed in a queue. Instead I armed myself with a shovel, leaving the phone on. It felt odd arming myself with something my uncle had been caught killing people with just a few weeks prior. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through his mind as he did it.
I called out, but no one responded. Someone could be hurt. As I stepped through the door I noticed broken glass on the floor. There was a broken wall sconce next to the kitchen doorway. There’d been a struggle.
The kitchen was in disarray. The fridge was open, and two chairs had been knocked over. A few stamps floated in a puddle on the floor from melted ice cubes. There was a broken picture frame on the floor, showing an older couple smiling next to what looked to be their grandson. I hung it back up on the wall. It seemed like the right thing to do.

I stepped back into the hall. I could see something on the floor in the living room, just a few steps away. But I had a bad feeling, so I stopped and listened. There was something outside. I clutched my shovel, but if it actually came to using it, I didn’t know if I would. Suddenly I felt like a complete idiot. What was I even doing? Was it really this important for me to prove my late uncle wasn’t the monster he was made out to be?
I hesitated. As my pulse started to rise, I hid in the bathroom.
Someone was coming. A pair of heavy boots stumbled through the front door. Someone was muttering to themselves, walking right past the bathroom door. There was a thump, and a dragging noise. Low, rumbling complaining. I considered bursting through the door, but I was paralyzed. I could barely breathe, and my muscles weren’t listening.
A few minutes passed, then there was a second thump and another dragging noise. I fumbled my phone out of my pocket. I'd been disconnected from the queue. I had to try and call the police, and as soon as the other person left, I would. I couldn't risk them hearing me. They entered the house one more time, as to check for something. Walking room by room, they started in the living room and made their way out. They were almost at the front door when they stopped. They were by the kitchen.

“Come out.”
It was a dark voice, way deeper than mine. My pulse jumped. They must’ve spotted the picture frame I hung back up on the wall. Goddamnit.
“Come out!”
Something was flung across the kitchen, and the heavy boots started stomping around. If I was caught in the bathroom, I’d be cornered. I had to make room. I put my hand on the doorknob, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
I stepped out into the hallway and saw her. The woman from the motel, dressed in heavy gardening boots and coveralls. She’d lost her glasses, and her eyes were going wild. They were twitching back and forth, seemingly changing size moment to moment. Her blue plastic gloves were covered in blood. She seemed taller.
I backed into the living room.

“You!” she growled.

She slowly walked up to me, like a lion stalking a gazelle. I backed into the living room, keeping the distance. I heard my feet step into something squishy. Coagulating blood? I readied my shovel.
“Are they valuable? Is that it? Is that why you’re doing this?” I panted.
I could barely keep my breath up to speak. I was on the edge of just making a run for it.
“They’re magical” she smiled, her voice both dark and shrieking simultaneously. “If you know how to use them.”
She made a lunge at me, and I almost slipped in the blood. I managed to bring down a bookcase between us, giving me some space. I broke a window next to me with the shovel. It was a bit of a drop, but I needed a backup plan. Something told me she wouldn’t let me get out of this alive. I had to stay calm.

Then she broke into a sprint. Using my shovel as a bat, I swung wild. It connected with the side of her ribcage, and it flung her across the floor. Something cracked. I didn’t stop to check on her, I climbed out the window. Before I even had one leg out, she was back up, and coming right at me.
That’s where the panic kicked in. That, right there. And in that moment, I noticed the side of her head was lined with Blue Sunflower stamps. She’d put them all on herself, the entire sheet.
She tackled me, and we both fell out the window. That moment of weightlessness came to a swift end as we crashed into the damp back yard. My entire weight came down on her, and her left shoulder was twisted in an unnatural angle. Something snapped, and I rolled away as fast as I could.
She didn’t slow down. Not for a moment.
I got another thwack in with the shovel, this time straight across her face. I tore up her ear and left a chunk of her scalp open. She didn’t stop. Instead, she gripped my shovel and threw it aside.

“You can’t just have one” she slurred. “You need a… a bigger dose. To stabilize it. To see.”
“You’re just… just a junkie!” I panted. “Just go away!”
'I have to... to thank you first!'
She burst into a sprint. I started running down the hill towards the downtown area. I weaved and bobbed through the birch trees, but she wasn’t even trying. She crashed through bushes, she ran into trees, and she tripped over logs. Still, she was fast. She was gaining on me.
I called out for help. There was no reasoning with this woman, and it was just a matter of time before she caught up to me. I was panicking. My heart was racing, and I could hear her footsteps coming closer. She was grunting like a wild animal, getting ready for the kill. That deep, rumbling noise in her throat made her sound like a bear.

There was a path. I was nearly out of breath, but I literally couldn’t stop. I followed the path, trying to call for help in-between breaths, but to no avail. I wouldn’t make it downtown. I had to do something, but my reptile brain was stopping me from thinking straight. But as soon as I felt those bloody gloves brush against my neck, my flight turned to fight.
I turned around and tackled her. All of a sudden, my world turned upside down. She hadn’t moved an inch, yet I was flung to the ground. She stood over me, moments away from tearing into me. I could see her eyes so clearly. Huge mistake.
She didn’t blink. Her pupils were dividing like cells, only to float back together in a pulse. Her veins were turning black along her neck, and there was a hint of blue along the edge of her hairline. She fell on top of me, placing one hand on my throat and the other on my mouth and nose. I fumbled to push her off, but she was deceivingly strong. I was powerless. Desperate. I didn’t even realize the muffled scream I heard was my own.

“It opens your eyes” she whispered. “You can see Her marks everywhere. It is so comforting.”
She held my mouth shut as she started choking me. Something in my neck cracked, and all I could smell was dried blood and plastic. She pressed down, hard, leaning into it with her entire body weight.
“I’m so glad you brought them to me. Thank you” she smiled. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
My lungs were screaming. Choking is not a peaceful way to go. It is pain. Excruciating pain, as your body begs you to stop whatever you’re doing. You’re bargaining with yourself not to let go, to not let the darkness take you. But it does.
As I was losing consciousness, I heard screaming further down the path. Screaming, a barking dog, and a gunshot. Then I was out.

I awoke the next day in a hospital. My family were already there. I could barely breathe, and I could hear a wheezing noise coming from my neck. I couldn’t move my head, it was too stiff.
Thank god for rednecks and their dogs.
No one knows who she was. She’d taken a bullet to the stomach, but just kept running. The dog had refused to attack her and had curled up in a ball next to the path. By the time they’d found me, my rescuer had to perform an impromptu tracheotomy with a pen knife to make me breathe. My neck had been crushed.

I’m still in recovery, and my voice is just starting to come back. I’ve learned that the Blue Sunflower stamps had an adhesive made from the stems of blue sunflower, which was later discovered to be toxic. They used to grow all over that town, but nowadays they’re pretty much extinct. There was a local pharmaceutical company in Tomskog called Hatchet Pharmaceuticals that helped produce the adhesive, but they’d just assumed that blue sunflowers were just like ordinary ones. I guess they were wrong. Needless to say, Hatchet Pharma aren’t around anymore.
I think Uncle Laszlo just wanted to use a cool stamp to send me a nice letter. He was poisoned, and it drove him mad. Strangely enough, there was nothing on his toxicology report to indicate some kind of altered state of mind, but I know for a fact he wouldn’t do this just out of the madness of his heart.

What that woman was raving on about, I… I don’t know. No one knows who she was. All we know is that she was looking for those stamps, and she was ready to kill to get them. Maybe there is more to that adhesive. The history of that entire event, and the town as a whole, seems spotty at best.
If anyone knows anything about the Blue Sunflower Stamps, or whatever happened to Hatchet Pharma, please let me know. I’m still looking for answers, even though my wife forbids it.
And if you find any of the stamps in circulation, just… don’t use them.

Date:1980-1997.
It starts with the girl (maybe 12 years old) being asked by her teacher in school, what happened to her during the summer (or something like that) and her telling of that story is the movie.
The girl lives with her uncle (her father's twin brother). The twin in jail is actuallly innocent, he took the fall for something his brother did.
When the twin gets out of jail, he pays a visit to his brother and asks for money as compensation for the time he did in prison for him. He doesn't get any so the ex-con kills his own brother and he just takes over his life, since they look alike.
Another thread in the story is about a relative of the girl. Maybe it's her cousin. She wants to visit her but she gets robbed by another girl along the way. She's forced to hitchike and two redneck type guys pick her up in an RV (a camper).
At one point they have a party in the RV, listening to a program on the radio that's actually a preacher giving a sermon but for some reason they believe it's an Iron Maiden concert.
